Men's basketball falls at UMES in final 2013-14 tune-up

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team had its final preseason test, a 95-55 loss to Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday evening at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Junior Chris Viqueira and freshman Gordon Jeter led the Sea Gull attack with nine points each.

The Hawks started the contest with a 16-2 run over the first 5:13 of the contest, with Salisbury struggling from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. For the first half, the Sea Gulls shot 20 percent.

Salisbury came out much stronger and calmer in the second half, closing the gap with a 21-5 run the first 10:45 of the second half. The Sea Gulls played the second half closer, with UMES holding a 40-36 edge in the second 20 minutes.

KyRee Jones led the UMES attack with 33 points.

UMES outrebounded the Sea Gulls 41-27 for the contest. Jeter led Salisbury with five rebounds in the game.

Senior Tim Harwood and freshman Charles Porter each added seven points for the Sea Gulls.

This was the 12th meeting all-time between the two schools, with UMES holding a 9-3 edge in the series, including tonight's win.

The Sea Gulls open their regular season this Friday, Nov. 15, staying on the Eastern Shore to take on Washington (Md.) College. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Chestertown, Md.
