SU dribbles past Stevenson, 70-58
SALISBURY, Md. - The regular
season may be winding down, but the Salisbury University men's
basketball team continues to impress. The Sea Gulls hosted Capital
Athletic Conference foe Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon,
coming away with a resounding 70-58 victory and improving their
record to 12-9 (8-5 CAC). The victory is the sixth in seven games
for Salisbury.
Salisbury did not trail once in the first half. In fact, the
closest the Mustangs (2-21, 2-12 CAC) got was a 29-29 tie with 1:25
left to play in the half, but the maroon and gold refused to go
into the locker room without a lead. A pair of free throws by
junior center Chris
McGrew (Burtonsville, Md.) gave Salisbury a two-point
advantage going into the second half. McGrew led the Sea Gulls in
scoring for the half, netting 14 points in 13 minutes of playing
time. Not far behind was senior guard/forward Greg Palmer
(Salisbury, Md.), who scored 11 points in the nine
minutes he played in the first half.
The second half was relatively low-scoring at times, but
certainly not for lack of effort; at one point, only 10 points were
scored between both teams in a span of almost eight minutes. The
back-and-forth battle finally started to go in Salisbury's favor
with seven minutes left to play, when the maroon and gold's
10-point advantage began to stretch. Senior guard Devin Jones
(Severn, Md.) dominated the second half and his
aggressive style sent him to the foul line, allowing him to convert
two lay-ups into three-point plays. Jones finished with a
team-high 23 points; Palmer finished the game with 19 points.
McGrew, who finished with 16 points, had a perfect night from
the line as he went 6-for-6.
The win improves Salisbury's record against Stevenson to 7-1,
since 1996. The maroon and gold have won the last four games
against the Mustangs.
The Sea Gulls will play in their final contest of the regular
season on Feb. 17, against CAC opponent Wesley College. Before
that, though, Salisbury will hit the road and look to avenge an
earlier season loss at the hands of CAC foe Marymount (Va.)
University on Feb. 15. Both games are scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
