Salisbury wins fifth straight, topples Gallaudet 64-50
SALISBURY, Md. - On a night where head coach Steve Holmes was honored with his 100th career win at the helm of the Salisbury University men's basketball team, another milestone was achieved. Salisbury's 64-50 defeat of Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet University marked the team's fifth-straight win, good for the team's first five-game win streak since Holmes' first season as Salisbury's head coach in 2000-2001.
The maroon and gold struggled to gain momentum in the first half. Senior guard/forward Greg Palmer (Salisbury, Md.) opened up scoring with a long-distance three-pointer, the first of his 10 points in the half, but Gallaudet (4-13, 0-11 CAC) remained relatively close in scoring. Palmer was the only Sea Gull to hit double-digits in the first as Salisbury (11-8, 7-4 CAC) took a 31-23 lead into the second half. Senior guard Devin Jones (Severn, Md.) dished out four assists before heading into the locker room at halftime.
Salisbury stretched its point advantage in the second half, going on a 12-0 run in the first four minutes of play. Once the Sea Gulls established their lead they never looked back, eventually defeating the Bison by 14 points. Palmer finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds; Jones finished with 12 points. Thirteen different Sea Gulls saw playing time in the win.
Tonight's conference contest marks the last between the two teams, as Gallaudet will be leaving the CAC at the end of this season to join the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Salisbury will look to make it six in a row as it heads to York, Pa. to face off against CAC opponent York (Pa.) College on Feb. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
