Men's basketball back to .500 as McGrew has career night
STEVENSON, Md. - The Salisbury University men's basketball team has earned back-to-back wins for the first time since early December with a 69-61 victory at Stevenson University Wednesday night. Salisbury has now won four straight against Stevenson, dating back to the 2007-08 season.
The Sea Gulls (8-8, 4-4, Capital Athletic Conference) opened Wednesday's game on a 15-2 run with 10 of those points coming from junior center Chris McGrew (Burtonsville, Md.). McGrew finished with a career-high 23 points in the game, marking the third time in the Sea Gulls' last four games that he has set a career mark in points.
Salisbury never trailed in the game holding the Mustangs (1-16, 1-7 CAC) to just 31.7 percent shooting from the floor, matching the lowest percentage by a Salisbury opponent this season.
The Sea Gulls ranked third in the Capital Athletic Conference in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 40.8 percent from the floor entering Wednesday's game.
Stevenson narrowed the deficit to five points, 55-50, with 5:55 left to play, but a 10-0 Salisbury run over four minutes put the game away.
Senior guard/forward Greg Palmer (Salisbury, Md.) finished with 19 points while sophomore guard Mike Maczko (Bel Air, Md.) and senior guard/forward Drew Dickson (Silver Spring, Md.) each finished with a team-high eight rebounds. McGrew pulled down seven boards to go with his 23 points.
Salisbury will look to make it three in a row Saturday afternoon when it takes on the Capital Athletic Conference's top team, St. Mary's (Md.) College, at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
