SU holds CAC leading scorer to season-low

DOVER, Del. - The Salisbury University men's basketball team held the Capital Athletic Conference leading scorer Rashawn Johnson (23.5 points per game average) to a season-low 11 points as the Wesley guard shot 3-for-14 from the floor. The loss of Johnson's scoring production was picked up by the Wolverines bench that outscored the Sea Gulls, 31-8.

Wesley clipped the Sea Gulls by 10, 68-58, on Saturday evening at the Wentworth Gymnasium in Dover, Del. The Wolverines' third straight win is also the season sweep between the two Route 13 rivals.

Salisbury (4-17, 2-10 CAC) had two players record double-doubles in the same game for the first time this season. Sophomore guard Greg Palmer (23 points, 11 rebounds) and senior guard Gary Ward (16 points, 12 rebounds) set season-high marks for rebounds in a game. The duo also drained six three-pointers for the Sea Gulls in the loss.

Wesley (12-9, 7-5 CAC) led 30-28 at the half. The Wolverines' bench came to life in the second half as they outscored the Gulls, 23-3. In addition to Johnson, Wesley had three other players reach double figures; Khyle Nelson (12 points, seven rebounds), James Stratton (10 points) and Evan Martin (10 points).

The two teams were even in the paint, 24-24, as SU held a slim advantage on points off turnovers, 17-15. Wesley outscored Salisbury on second chance shots, 10-4, and fast break points, 12-10. The Wolverines shot 34.5 percent from the field for the game compared to Salisbury's 42.0 percent.

The difference was at the free throw line where the Wolverines made 25-of-39 attempts (64.1 percent). SU only made 23 trips to the foul line where it made 10 (43.5 percent). Wesley outrebounded Salisbury, 45-35.

Salisbury will next be at home for "Coaches vs. Cancer" night on Wednesday, February 13, as the Sea Gulls welcome Gallaudet University to the Maggs Center for a 7:30 p.m. CAC game.
