SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury
University men's basketball team scored a season-high 84 points on
Wednesday night as the Sea Gulls hosted Rt. 13 rival Wesley College
at the Maggs Center. The visiting Wolverines came away with a hard
fought 93-84 win before a crowd of 225.
The Sea Gulls (2-11, 0-4 CAC) had all five starters score double
figures as the Sea Gulls shot 57.1 percent from the field. SU was
led by senior guard Gary Ward's 20 points and five
rebounds. Junior guard Wesley Sweet added 16
points and a team-high seven rebounds followed by senior
Jonas Vaitkus (15 points, five rebounds), junior
Brandon Abney (10, 5) and sophomore Greg
Palmer (10, 6). This is the 10th straight loss for the
Gulls.
Wesley (8-5, 3-1 CAC) was led by junior guard Rashawn Johnson
who scored a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. The Wolverines
had five players finish the game in double figures including
Alphonzo Wright (15 points), Kevin Johnson (14), Evan Martin (10)
and Khyle Nelson (10). The Wolverines shot 48 percent from the
field and sealed the game with free throws down the stretch as
Wesley shot 19-of-37 from the free-throw line.
The Wolverines took a six-point lead into halftime, 48-42, after
the Sea Gulls led by five with 7:31 to go in the first half. Wesley
led the entire second half, as much as 19 points late in the game,
to seal its third straight conference victory. The two teams
combined to commit 46 turnovers and 44 fouls.
Salisbury will travel to Washington, D.C., on Saturday to face
Gallaudet University at 4 p.m. in another CAC contest.
