ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's basketball suffered its worst loss of the season to Capital
Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's (Md.) College, 101-67,
Saturday afternoon on the road before a crowd of 381. The Sea Gulls
remain winless on the road in conference this season.
Salisbury (4-15, 2-8 CAC) failed to contain the SMC offense the
way it had in the teams' first meeting of the season (12/05/07)
when the Gulls lost by four, 73-69. The Seahawks led every
statistical category on Saturday as they shot 50.7 percent from the
floor, 51.9 percent from three-point range and 73.1 percent from
the free-throw line.
St. Mary's (11-9, 6-5 CAC) had five players reach double digits,
led by guard Tyson Lesesne (19 points) and Mike Smelkinson (18
points). The Seahawks drained a season-high 14 three-pointers and
surpassed the 100-point plateau for the second time this season.
The Sea Gulls struggled offensively as they shot a season-low
35.6 percent from the field and only managed five assists, also a
season-low. SU had trouble handling the ball as the Sea Gulls
committed 30 turnovers, the second highest total this season, which
led to 37 Seahawk points.
For his 11th consecutive game sophomore Greg
Palmer scored double figures as he led the Sea Gulls with
17 points. He also extended his three-point basket streak to 11
straight games as he was 3-for-7 from three-point range. Seniors
Gary Ward (14 points) and Jonas
Vaitkus (11 points) were the other Gulls in double digits.
Salisbury will remain on the road as the Sea Gulls travel to
York, Pa., on Wednesday, February 6, to take on the Spartans in an
8 p.m. CAC game. York (14-6, 9-2 CAC) won the last meeting 73-62
(12/08/07) as the Spartans enter the game first in the conference.
