NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Capital Athletic
Conference announced its weekly athlete of the week awards and
Salisbury University senior guard Gary Ward (Poolesville,
Md./Poolesville) was named the men's basketball
co-recipient for the week of February 18. Ward shares the award
with St. Mary's (Md.) College senior Mike Smelkinson.
Ward recorded his second double-double in three games as he
scored 22 points and made a team-high 10 rebounds on Senior Day as
the Sea Gulls defeated Villa Julie College, 79-72, to keep their
Capital Athletic Conference postseason hopes alive. For the week
Ward scored 42 points, made 17 rebounds, three assists and three
steals in two home wins for the Gulls. The senior from Poolesville,
Md., was also 10-for-25 (40 percent) from behind the three-point
line and shot 14-for-35 (40 percent) from the field in two games.
Ward was also named to the PrestoSports/Pride of Maryland Honor
Roll for the week of February 11-17.
For the season, Ward is second on the team in scoring (15.0
points per game), rebounds (109), assists (53) and free throws made
(46). He leads the team with 66 three-pointers made.
Ward is the second SU men's basketball student-athlete to earn
CAC Athlete of the Week honors this season. Sophomore teammate
Greg Palmer was a co-recipient on January 21.
Salisbury (6-17, 4-10 CAC) returns to action on Wednesday as the
Sea Gulls travel to Arlington, Va., to face CAC foe Marymount (Va.)
University in an 8 p.m. game.
