Ward named CAC Men's Basketball Co-Athlete of the Week

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly athlete of the week awards and Salisbury University senior guard Gary Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was named the men's basketball co-recipient for the week of February 18. Ward shares the award with St. Mary's (Md.) College senior Mike Smelkinson.

Ward recorded his second double-double in three games as he scored 22 points and made a team-high 10 rebounds on Senior Day as the Sea Gulls defeated Villa Julie College, 79-72, to keep their Capital Athletic Conference postseason hopes alive. For the week Ward scored 42 points, made 17 rebounds, three assists and three steals in two home wins for the Gulls. The senior from Poolesville, Md., was also 10-for-25 (40 percent) from behind the three-point line and shot 14-for-35 (40 percent) from the field in two games.

Ward was also named to the PrestoSports/Pride of Maryland Honor Roll for the week of February 11-17.

For the season, Ward is second on the team in scoring (15.0 points per game), rebounds (109), assists (53) and free throws made (46). He leads the team with 66 three-pointers made.

Ward is the second SU men's basketball student-athlete to earn CAC Athlete of the Week honors this season. Sophomore teammate Greg Palmer was a co-recipient on January 21.

Salisbury (6-17, 4-10 CAC) returns to action on Wednesday as the Sea Gulls travel to Arlington, Va., to face CAC foe Marymount (Va.) University in an 8 p.m. game.
