Sea Gulls headed to NCAA tournament for 33rd time

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 6 Salisbury University field hockey team received news on Sunday night that it would get to continue its season, receiving an at-large bid into the 2017 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.

The Sea Gulls, who closed out the regular season with a 12-4 record, received one of five Pool C bids in the field as they make the program's 33rd NCAA tournament appearance. They have also earned a first-round bye and will begin play in the second round on Saturday, November 11.

Salisbury will travel to Grantham, Pennsylvania for a regional hosted by Messiah College and take on either Trinity (Conn.) College or Gwynedd Mercy University in the second round. Those two teams will square off in a first-round contest on Wednesday, November 8.

The Sea Gulls won the only meeting ever with Trinity, during the 1982 season, while they have never met the Griffins.

Salisbury's second-round game will begin at 2 p.m., on Saturday, while Messiah will play at 11 a.m., against the winner of another first-round game between Washington and Lee University and Denison University. Saturday's winners will play on Sunday.

The winner to come out of Messiah will head to the NCAA championship weekend in Louisville, Kentucky, playing in a national semifinal at 4 p.m., on Friday, November 17, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, November 19.
