FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly field hockey award winners on Monday and Salisbury University sophomore Jillian Hughes was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
The defender helped Salisbury to its fifth-straight shutout, with a 2-0 win against St. Mary's College of Maryland last Wednesday in the team's regular-season finale. The Salisbury defense allowed just one shot attempt by the Seahawks – that coming in the final minutes of the game – and it was blocked just off the stick.
Hughes has a pair of defensive saves this season, and has helped the Salisbury defense post a team goals-against average of 0.57 which is the lowest mark in the nation.
The Sea Gulls enter the CAC tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 17 York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday at 6 p.m., in Sea Gull Stadium.
