SU posts seventh shutout of the season in 4-0 victory over Wesley
DOVER, Del. - Senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) tallied two goals to claim her fifth multi-goal game of the season as she led the Salisbury University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College on Tuesday. The shutout marks SU's seventh of the season and third in its past five games.
Salisbury (11-1, 4-0 CAC) came out of the gates strong as Correll put the Sea Gulls on top with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the contest. The 1-0 lead held strong for the next 16 minutes before sophomore forward Caitlin Walker (Fallston, Md.) notched an unassisted goal at the 17:16 mark. SU headed into the intermission period with a 3-0 lead after Correll took a dish from freshman midfielder Kristina Fusco (Forest Hill, Md.) and deposited it into the back of the cage.
The Sea Gulls capped their scoring in the contest when Fusco dished out her second consecutive assist to senior midfielder Caitlin Ruffus (Lincroft, N.J.), who wasted no time in putting the ball behind Wolverine goalie, Sarah Johnson.
Wesley (10-4, 3-1 CAC) managed to get off just four shots in the contest, none of which were on goal. The Wolverines were propelled by Johnson (14 saves). Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) picked up her 11th win but did not have to record a save.
Salisbury will now turn its attention to its highly anticipated match against No. 13 ranked The College of New Jersey. The Sea Gulls will travel to Ewing, N.J., to square off with the Lions. SU will looking to avenge its 3-2 overtime loss to TCNJ last season.
