Correll has career day in route of Kenyon
GAMBIER, Ohio - The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team wrapped up their trip to Ohio with a 7-0 win against Kenyon College on Sunday. Senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) scored a career-high five goals in the contest.
The Sea Gulls (9-1) jumped ahead early when Correll found the back off the net off an assist from senior forward Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) . Correll would double up her scoring total with an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute. SU outshot the Lords (1-8) 16-3 in the first half and held a 6-3 advantage in corners.
Salisbury started the second half off with a barrage of goals in a three minute span to push the lead to 5-0. Correll pushed the lead to 3-0 and recorded her first hat trick of the season, off an assist from sophomore forward Alison Bloodsworth (Delmar, Md.) in the 41st minute. Junior midfielder Courtney Webster (Chance, Md.) scored 15 seconds later off another Beladino assist. Correll scored again as she was assisted by sophomore back Tara McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Correll closed out her scoring burst with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute. Webster closed out the scoring for the maroon and gold with an assist from McGovern in 56th minute.
For the match the Sea Gulls outshot the Lords 29-3 and held a 15-3 corner advantage. SU junior goalkeeper Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) played 63 minutes in the net for the Sea Gulls and recorded two saves, freshman Rebecca Tracey (Perry Hall, Md.) played the final seven minutes. Kenyon's Jenna Klein played the entire game for the Lords and finished with nine saves.
The Sea Gulls will return to their Capital Athletic Conference schedule Saturday, October 3 when they will travel to York, Pa. to face York (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. The Sea Gulls defeated the Spartans 3-0 last season on Sept. 27, 2008.
