FREDERICK, Md. - The No. 6 Salisbury University
field hockey team saw eight different players find the back of the
cage as the Sea Gulls opened the 2009 season with a 10-0 victory at
Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood College.
The Sea Gulls (1-0, 1-0 CAC) came out of the gates hot, scoring
just three minutes, 28 seconds into the game, on a goal by
Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley, N.J.), her first
of the season. A pair of Lauren Correll (Bridgeville,
Del.) goals and a second by Beladino had Salisbury up 4-0
less than 15 minutes into the game, and the Sea Gulls would never
look back.
"We were very balanced," Salisbury coach Dawn
Chamberlin said. "I think the veteran offensive line
really picked it up, looked good and really moved the ball well. We
attacked the goal well which is great for the first game of the
season."
Chamberlin also felt her team had excellent passing and executed
well on their corner opportunities, getting 21 of those chances in
the contest.
Salisbury outshot Hood 33-5 in the game, and starting goalkeeper
Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
needed to make just two saves in a little over 56 minutes of play
to capture her first win of the season.
A number of players saw their first collegiate action in the
game, and four players tallied their first collegiate goals.
Melissa Slocum (Salisbury, Md.), Caitlin Powers (Towson,
Md.), Kristina Fusco (Forest Hill, Md.) and Emily
Ellenberger (Gaithersburg, Md.) each scored their first
goals against Hood (0-1, 0-1).
Salisbury will be back in action Saturday night as the Sea Gulls
host St. Mary's at Sea Gull Stadium at 6 p.m.
