No. 6 Sea Gulls defeat No. 14 Christopher Newport 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No. 6 Salisbury University field hockey team picked up its third straight and first come-from-behind victory of the season with a 2-1 win over No. 14 Christopher Newport University Wednesday afternoon at Captains Field.
It took some time for the Sea Gulls (3-0) to find their rhythm in today's game and the Captains (2-1) took full advantage. In the 15th minute of action, Stephanie Bair shot past SU junior goalkeeper Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) (one save) to put CNU up 1-0.
The maroon and gold tied things up in the 31st minute when freshman midfielder Kristina Fusco (Forest Hill, Md.) took control of a rebounded ball and pushed it across the line to even things up.
After the halftime break, the Sea Gulls began to dictate play. In the 47th minute the Gulls earned a penalty corner, where the ball was played in front of the net. During the scramble, sophomore midfielder Caitlin Walker (Fallston, Md.) shot the ball into the back of the goal to give the Sea Gulls the 2-1 lead.
The Sea Gulls were led by the individual performances of senior forwards Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.). The Sea Gulls outshot the Captains 15-4 throughout the match and held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore back Tara McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) did a good job of neutralizing the CNU attack throughout the match.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action this weekend when they host the SU Invitational at Sea Gull Stadium. SU will take on Frostburg (Md.) State University on Saturday at 11 a.m. then square off against No. 3 Ursinus College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
