McGovern selected as ECAC Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year; Correll named to second team

CAPE COD, Mass. - The awards continue to roll in for the Salisbury University national champion field hockey program, as sophomore defender Tara McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Mid-Atlantic Defensive Player of the Year. McGovern was also named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region first team, while senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) was named second-team All-Region.

McGovern played and started in all 21 games for the Sea Gulls, contributing to the Sea Gulls' ability to limit opponents to 0.52 goals per game. The 2009 season was one of the most successful defensively for Salisbury; the 0.52 goals against average (GAA) was second-lowest in program history, having allowed just 0.38 during the 1997 season. Thirteen shutouts in 2009 also was the second-best total in program history, coming up one short of the title team in 1986. McGovern chipped in on the offensive end with 15 points on four goals and seven assists, including an assist in the 1-0 win over Messiah College in the national championship game.

Correll was the leading scorer for Salisbury in 2009. In her final season as a Sea Gull Correll had eight assists, and tied the 14th-best single-season record in program history with 20 goals. The three-time All-American also finished the season with three game-winning goals, giving her 20 game-winners for her career. Correll ended her career with 78 goals and 178 points; both totals put her second in program history.

The ECAC Mid-Atlantic Offensive Player of the Year award went to Ursinus College sophomore Alyssa Thren, and Rookie of the Year honors went to freshman Jenna Disabatino of Wilkes University.
