McGovern, Chamberlin receive top CAC honors; five other Sea Gulls named to teams
YORK, Pa. - As the No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team prepares for its second-round NCAA tournament game against the College of Wooster, the Sea Gulls can celebrate even more Capital Athletic Conference accolades; a CAC Player of the Year, a CAC Coach of the Year, and five additional players named to All-CAC teams.
Sophomore back Tara McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was honored as the 2009 CAC Player of the Year. Just last year, the then-freshman garnered CAC Rookie of the Year honors. Additionally, this is the second year that McGovern has been named to the All-CAC first team. Her Player of the Year title marks the eighth-straight year that a Sea Gull has earned the prestigious award.
Five other Sea Gulls also earned All-CAC honors. Senior forward Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) and senior midfielder Michelle Rowe (Elkton, Md.) were all named to the first team. This is the third year that each player has been named to an All-CAC team.
Junior midfielder Katie Fost (Lusby, Md.) and sophomore Caitlin Walker (Fallston, Md.) were each named to the second-team. This is the second year that Fost has been named to the second team, as she also earned the honor in 2008. The maroon and gold's six players on the 2009 All-CAC teams is a CAC-best.
Head coach Dawn Chamberlin garnered the CAC Coach of the Year award for the 13th time, as she led her Sea Gulls to their 15th consecutive CAC Championship on Nov. 7, 2009. This past January, Chamberlin was inducted into the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) Hall of Fame, and currently boasts a career record of 352-90-8 in 23 seasons.
The Sea Gulls will be hosting the second and third rounds of NCAA tournament action this weekend at Sea Gull Stadium. The maroon and gold will face off against the College of Wooster on Saturday at 10 a.m. For more details on the match-ups taking place this weekend, please see the link below.
