National championship field hockey team honored in Annapolis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It has been more than three months since the Salisbury University field hockey team claimed the program’s fifth national championship, but the players are still being recognized for their outstanding accomplishment.
On Monday, March 8 the team was invited to the Maryland State House and was honored on the floor of both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. Del. Page Elmore sponsored resolutions on the House side while Sen. Lowell Stoltzfus sponsored resolutions in the Senate.
The
resolutions recognized the team, for its national championship, and
head coach Dawn Chamberlin, who was honored this
season as the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association)
Division III National Coach of the Year.
This will be Senator Stoltzfus’ final term as he will not seek re-election. The team presented him with a framed image which included photos of each of the four teams that won national championships while he sat in office representing the Lower Eastern Shore.
All 30 members of the team were able to make the trip to Annapolis, along with Chamberlin and assistant coach Danielle Twilley.
The Sea Gulls will begin their quest toward a sixth program title this fall. The team will open the 2010 season on Sept. 4 when it hosts Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington at Sea Gull Stadium.
