CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Salisbury University
field hockey team moved up to No. 8 in the latest STX/National
Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III coaches' poll
released Tuesday.
Salisbury (13-3) earned a total of 353 points as the maroon
and gold closed out the regular-season schedule with a 1-0 victory
over Catholic University of America last week. Salisbury is
sandwiched between No. 7 Lebanon Valley College
(17-2) and No. 9 Trinity (Conn.) College (12-3) in the
rankings.
For the third time this season there is a new No. 1 team in the
country as Messiah College (13-1) garnered 11 first-place votes and
558 points to edge out No. 2 Tufts University (15-0) by two points
for the top spot. The Jumbos also earned 11 first-place votes.
Ursinus College (15-2) remained ranked at No. 3 after a big win
over Johns Hopkins University. The Bears received five first-place
votes and 544 points. Former No. 1 Bowdoin College (13-2) suffered
its second setback this season as the Polar Bears, the defending
national champions, fell to No. 4. Bowdoin had three first-place
votes and 511 points. No. 5 The College of New Jersey (14-2) rounds
out the top five.
Salisbury will next be in action on Wednesday, November 5, as
the top-seed Sea Gulls host fourth-seed Stevenson University in the
Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal game at 6 p.m. in
Sea Gull Stadium.
