YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University field
hockey team swept the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference awards as
the league office released its all-conference teams on Friday.
Sophomore Kandice Hancock was named the CAC
Co-Player of the Year, freshman Tara McGovern was
selected as CAC Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Dawn
Chamberlin garnered CAC Coach of the Year honors. This is
the sixth time in school history the Sea Gulls have swept the three
conference postseason awards, the first time since 2003. The No. 7
Sea Gulls (15-3) also placed seven players on the All-CAC teams.
Salisbury, who captured its record 14th consecutive CAC
championship this season, had three members named to the All-CAC
first team in Hancock, McGovern and junior Lauren
Correll. Juniors Beverly Beladino and
Michelle Rowe along with sophomores Katie
Fost and Courtney Webster were all named
to All-CAC second team.
Hancock is Salisbury's seventh consecutive and 12th overall CAC
Player of the Year. The 2007 CAC Rookie of the Year is receiving
her second consecutive first team selection. Hancock shares the
2008 CAC Co-Player of the Year award with St. Mary's (Md.) College
senior midfielder Emily Smithson. Hancock is the ninth player from
an Eastern Shore high school to be named CAC Player of the Year in
the past 12 selections for SU. Her selection also stands as the
sixth out of the past seven Sea Gull honorees that have been from
either Washington (Md.) or Delmar (Del.) High School.
Hancock has tallied nine goals and added five assists for the
Sea Gulls this season. She is ranked sixth in the conference in
both shots (54) and shots per game (3.11). The sophomore midfielder
is tied for third in the CAC with four game-winning goals. The
Westover, Md., native was named CAC Player of the Week on September
15 after she tallied four goals and scored the game-winner against
No. 13 Christopher Newport University. In 40 career games she has
scored 14 goals, 16 assists and 44 points.
Correll, a co-captain, has had an outstanding junior season for
the Sea Gulls. She is making her second straight appearance on the
All-CAC first team. The All-American forward is leading the team in
goals (17) and points (36). The Bridgeville, Del., native leads the
CAC in goals per game (0.94), shots (96) and shots on goal (72).
Her 0.94 goals per game and 2.0 points per game ranks 28th and 40th
in Division III, respectively. She was selected as the CAC Player
of the Week on September 29 as she scored the final goal in SU's
2-0 victory over No. 7 Rowan University on September 24. In three
seasons, she has scored 57 goals, 14 assists and 128 points. Her
point total ranks seventh all-time in school history.
McGovern, the CAC Rookie of the Year, rounds out the Salisbury
players on the All-CAC first team. The true freshman has tallied
two goals on 22 shots. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y., product is
ranked eighth in the CAC in both assists (four) and assists per
game (0.22). The back has been a mainstay in the Sea Gull lineup as
she has started every game this season. McGovern tallied her first
collegiate goal in Salisbury's 6-0 victory over Frostburg State
University on September 14. The freshman was honored as the CAC
Player of the Week on October 27. She is the eighth CAC Rookie of
the Year selection in the history of the SU program.
Beladino is receiving her second career All-CAC honor after
being selected the first team a year ago. The Putnam Valley, N.Y.,
native has started and played in 14 games for Salisbury this
season. She is third on the team in goals (seven) and points (17).
The forward tallied the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory over
Catholic University of America on October 29. She is ranked eighth
in the conference in shots per game (2.79), ninth in goals per game
(0.50) and 10th in points per game (1.21). In her three-year
career, she has scored 31 goals, 10 assists for 72 points.
Fost has been a big part of Salisbury's stingy defense this
season as she moved from midfield to back in ‘08. She is one
of the reasons why the Sea Gull defense is ranked No. 1 in Division
III in both goals against average (0.5) and shutouts per game
(0.67). Salisbury has posted 12 shutouts on the season. The Lusby,
Md., native tallied one assist in SU's, 7-0, CAC semifinal win over
Stevenson University on November 5. Fost
Rowe earns her second All-CAC honor in her career at SU. Last
season the Elkton, Md., product was named to the all-conference
first team. The junior midfielder has started every game for SU in
'08. She tallied goals in SU's 6-0 victory over Frostburg State
University on September 14 and the Sea Gulls 4-1 triumph over
University of Mary Washington on October 25. She also tallied one
assist in Salisbury's 4-0 victory over SUNY Brockport on September
13. With Rowe's help, SU is ranked sixth in Division III with a
3.03 scoring margin. In three seasons, she has played in 56 games
and scored three goals, 10 assists and tallied 16 points.
Webster is making her first career appearance on an All-CAC
team. The Chance, Md., product has started every game this season.
She has two goals, six assists and 10 points. The midfielder is
ranked third in the CAC in both assists (six) and assists per game
average (0.33), which are both team-highs. She is ranked fifth in
the CAC in shots (54) and shots per game (3.11).
This is the 12th CAC Coach of the Year award for Chamberlin
since the Sea Gulls joined the conference in 1994. The National
Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee won the
conference award for 11 straight seasons from 1995-2005. She has
guided Salisbury to a 336-88-8 record in her 22-year career at the
helm. The seven All-CAC selections in '08 increase the program
total to 87 since Salisbury joined the conference. SU has had at
least three All-CAC first team selections since 1998 and at least
two All-CAC first team selections since 1994.
