Three Salisbury players named All-American by Womensfieldhockey.com

SALISBURY, Md. - The Womensfieldhockey.com Web site recently announced its 2008 postseason awards and honors and Salisbury University had three field hockey players selected to the Womensfieldhockey.com Division III All-American teams. Sophomore Kandice Hancock headlined the group and was named to the first team. Freshman Tara McGovern was named the Division III Rookie of the Year, was selected to the All-American second team and also was placed on the All-Rookie squad. Junior Lauren Correll received third-team All-American honors.

Hancock earns her second All-American award this postseason as she was selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American second team last week. The sophomore led the No. 7 Sea Gulls to a 15-4 record and was named the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Co-Player of the Year. The All-South region first team member tallied 10 goals and added five assists for the Sea Gulls this season. Hancock ranks sixth in the conference in both shots (57) and shots per game (3.0). The midfielder is tied for third in the CAC with four game-winning goals. The Westover, Md., native was named CAC Player of the Week on September 15 after she tallied four goals and scored the game-winner against No. 13 Christopher Newport University. With 40 games under her belt, the two-time All-CAC first team midfielder will enter her junior season with 15 goals, 16 assists and 46 points. She was named to the 2007 Womensfieldhockey.com Division III All-Rookie squad as well.

McGovern earns her second Rookie of the Year award this season as she was named the 2008 CAC Rookie of the Year at the end of the season. She was also selected to the All-South region second team and the All-CAC first team. In her first year at SU, McGovern was a mainstay in the Sea Gull lineup as she started every game this season. The true freshman tallied two goals on 22 shots. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y., product ranks eighth in the CAC in both assists (four) and assists per game (0.22). McGovern tallied her first collegiate goal in Salisbury's 6-0 victory over Frostburg State University on September 14. The freshman was honored as the CAC Player of the Week on October 27.

Correll receives her second All-American this post season and the fourth overall in her career. This is the second straight year Correll was named to the Womensfieldhockey.com All-American team; last year she was a second team selection. The forward was named to the NFHCA Division III All-American third team last week along with being named to the All-South region first team. The junior co-captain had an outstanding campaign for the Sea Gulls as she led the team in goals (18) and points (38). The Bridgeville, Del., native led the CAC in goals per game (0.95), shots (103) and shots on goal (75). Correll's 0.95 goals per game ranks 26th in the nation. Correll averaged 2.0 points per game. She was selected as the CAC Player of the Week on September 29 as she scored the final goal in SU's 2-0 victory over No. 7 Rowan University on September 24. The two-time All-CAC first team forward will enter her senior season with 58 goals, 14 assists and 130 points. Her point total ranks seventh all-time in school history.

Ursinus College's Jennie Moore was named the Division III Offensive Player of the Year, The College of New Jersey's Kelly Mitchell was named Division III Defensive Player of the Year and Tufts University's Tina McDavitt was named Division III Coach of the Year.
