Hancock, Correll honored as NFHCA All-Americans

CHANDLER, Ariz. - The 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-American teams were announced and Salisbury University had two players honored. Sophomore midfielder Kandice Hancock was named to the second team and junior forward Lauren Correll was distinguished as a third-team All-American. The two selections now give the SU program 80 All-Americans since 1974.

Hancock earns her first-ever All-American award after a season where the No. 7 Sea Gulls went 15-4 and the midfielder was named the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year. The All-South region first team member tallied 10 goals and added five assists for the Sea Gulls this season. Hancock ranks sixth in the conference in both shots (57) and shots per game (3.0). The sophomore midfielder is tied for third in the CAC with four game-winning goals. The Westover, Md., native was named CAC Player of the Week on September 15 after she tallied four goals and scored the game-winner against No. 13 Christopher Newport University. With 40 games under her belt, the two-time All-CAC first team midfielder will enter her junior season with 15 goals, 16 assists and 46 points.

Correll is an All-American for a second straight year as she has already been named to the '08 All-South region first team. In 2007, Correll was honored as second team All-American. The junior co-captain had an outstanding campaign for the Sea Gulls as she led the team in goals (18) and points (38). The Bridgeville, Del., native leads the CAC in goals per game (0.95), shots (103) and shots on goal (75). Correll's 0.95 goals per game ranks 26th in the nation. Correll averaged 2.0 points per game. She was selected as the CAC Player of the Week on September 29 as she scored the final goal in SU's 2-0 victory over No. 7 Rowan University on September 24. The two-time All-CAC first team forward will enter her senior season with 58 goals, 14 assists and 130 points. Her point total ranks seventh all-time in school history.

Hancock and Correll continue the 28 year streak of at least one Salisbury field hockey player being named All-American. SU coach Dawn Chamberlin has coached 50 All-Americans in her 22 season reign.
