DOVER, Del. - The Salisbury University field
hockey team hadn't faced a three-goal deficit in nearly five years.
The last time the Sea Gulls were down three they lost 4-1 to The
College of New Jersey. On Wednesday afternoon, the No. 4 Sea Gulls
found themselves down three goals, 27 minutes into their Capital
Athletic Conference game with Wesley College. This time around
Salisbury responded with a 5-0 second half run and defeated the
Wolverines 5-3 on the road.
Salisbury (11-1, 3-0 CAC) fell behind quickly as Wesley scored
back-to-back goals, within a minute of each other, with the latter
being scored on a Taryn Neeman unassisted goal at the 13 minute
mark. Wesley (6-3, 2-2 CAC) tacked on another goal 14 minutes
later. The last goal chased starting goalie Maria
Ramoundos (three saves) and made SU coach Dawn
Chamberlin insert freshman Claire
Davey-Karlson, who finished out the game.
The three goals are the most the Gulls have given up to an
opponent since September 14, 2005 when Salisbury defeated Johns
Hopkins, 8-3.
Salisbury got back on track when senior Danielle
Twilley started the Sea Gull comeback with her eighth goal
of the season. Twilley scored off an assist from freshman
Kandice Hancock just 44 seconds into the second
half.
Hancock scored her third goal of the season as she tapped in the
ball on the right side of the cage past Wesley goalie LeAnne Hyslop
(13 saves).
Sophomore Beverly Beladino continued the Sea
Gull momentum when she scored her eighth goal of the season on an
unassisted goal at the 53 minute mark to knot the game at three.
Sophomore Lauren Correll finished out the game
with back-to-back goals, her 10th and 11th of the season. The
latter of which was assisted by senior Ashley
Twigg at the 59 minute mark.
SU outshout Wesley 25-7 and held an 18-1 advantage in the second
half. The Sea Gulls also took 21 penalty corners to Wesley's five.
This is the first year for Wesley in the CAC. The last time the two
schools faced each other was in 2003.
The Sea Gulls will return to action next Tuesday, October 9,
when they host Hood College at Sea Gull Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. CAC
game.
