SALISBURY, Md. - It was a memorable night in
the history of Salisbury University athletics as the No. 3 field
hockey team played the first-ever night game at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Sea Gulls beat Hood College 11-0 in a Capital Athletic
Conference game before a crowd of 125.
Salisbury (12-1, 4-0 CAC) set eight season-high marks in the
Gulls' sixth shutout this season. The Sea Gulls recorded 58 shots,
40 shots on goal, 31 shots in one half, 25 penalty corners, 23
total points, 11 goals, a margin of victory of + 11 and nine goals
in one half, all of which were season-highs.
The Sea Gulls had eight different goal scorers in the game led
by sophomores Lauren Correll (three goals) and
Beverly Beladino (two goals, one assist). SU led
Hood 2-0 at the half before the maroon and gold reeled off nine
goals in the second half.
SU played every single player on its roster. Senior goalie
Maria Ramoundos (12-0) started the game in the
cage for the Sea Gulls and left after 58 minutes as freshman
Claire Davey-Karlson came in to finish out the
game.
The Sea Gull defense also posted some season best numbers. SU
allowed no shots or penalty corners by Hood. The Blazers, on
offense, didn't cross midfield until 27 minutes into the game.
Salisbury was 3-for-3 on penalty strokes as senior
Danielle Twilley, freshman Kandice
Hancock and Beladino scored those attempts.
The Sea Gulls scored three goals in a minute and 35 seconds
early in the second half. The final four goals were scored by
freshman Abby Tedford, senior Lauren
Dietz, freshman Camile Walker and
freshman Katy Lamboni. Walker's goal in the 59th
minute was her first collegiate goal.
Hood (3-6, 0-3 CAC) goalie Anne Marie Hantman recorded 23 saves,
the most by an opponent this season against SU. Blazer midfielder
Sarah Balukoff made five defensive saves in the game.
Over the summer A-Turf was installed at Sea Gull Stadium along
with lights. This was the first game that the lights have been used
for an official SU athletic event.
Salisbury will now turn its attention to No. 2 The College of
New Jersey. The Sea Gulls will travel to Ewing, N.J., on Saturday
to face the Lions in a clash of two national powers. The game will
begin at 5 p.m.
