Gulls drop to No. 3 in latest STX/NFHCA poll

GLEN ALLEN, Va. - The Salisbury University field hockey team dropped one spot in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III coaches' poll released Tuesday as the Sea Gulls are now No. 3 in the country.

Salisbury (15-1, 6-0 Capital Athletic Conference) earned a total of 687 points and one first-place vote as SU is now behind No. 1 Bowdoin College (11-0) and No. 2 Lebanon Valley College (16-0), who are both unbeaten. SU only trails LVC by a total of 11 points and five first-place votes.

The Sea Gulls finished CAC play last week as they started off the week with a 5-1 win over Villa Julie College last Tuesday (October 16) and followed with a 4-0 shutout over University of Mary Washington last Saturday (October 20) on the road. With the two wins Salisbury clinched the top-seed for the upcoming CAC tournament and received a first round bye.

Christopher Newport University (13-1) and The College of New Jersey (9-2) round out the top five. CNU was the only other team to receive first-place votes as they got two. The Captains are the lone team to defeat SU this season back on September 5, 2-1, on the road. The Gulls have ripped off 14 straight wins since that set back.

Salisbury will play its final regular season game this Wednesday, October 24, as it travels to Washington, D.C., to meet up with Catholic University of America at 4 p.m. SU will then turn its attention to the CAC tournament where the maroon and gold will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, October 31, against the winner of No. 4 seed VJC and No. 5 seed UMW. Game time has not yet been determined.
