SALISBURY, Md. – Three Salisbury University football players have been named to the Beyond Sports College Network's Division III Preseason All-America team, the organization announced. Seniors Dan Griffin and Matt McMurdo were named to the second team while junior Andre Carter was named to the third team.
Griffin, a quarterback, was the 2011 Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year. Griffin started all 13 games and completed 48-of-89 passes for 1,208 passing yards. He was the first Salisbury signal caller to eclipse the 1,000-yard passing mark since 1998. Griffin also ran for 1,057 yards and 20 touchdowns.
McMurdo, a linebacker, was a 2011 First Team All-Empire 8 player who during that season accumulated 73 tackles, five sacks and one touchdown. McMurdo scored the touchdown off a fumble return against Western New England University on Nov. 19 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. He recorded a career-high 15 tackles against St. John Fisher College on Nov. 5, 2011.
Carter, a defensive back, was a 2011 First Team All-Empire 8 player. Carter finished the 2011 season with 36 tackles and a touchdown. He led the team with seven interceptions and has 10 picks during his career, returning three for touchdowns.
The Sea Gulls will kick off the 2012 season at Christopher Newport University on Sept. 1. Their first home game will be against Wesley College on Sept. 8, beginning at 6 p.m.
