SALISBURY Md. – Salisbury University senior linebacker Jamey McClendon was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for football by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
To be eligible for a nomination, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his team.
McClendon carries a 3.42 cumulative GPA in physical education and has led Salisbury (8-1, 6-0 Empire 8) in solo tackles (25), assisted tackles (42) and total tackles (67) this season. McClendon also leads the team with 5.5 sacks for 34 yards lost and is second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss for 39 yards.
McClendon has recovered two fumbles, forced another and has three pass defenses. He also has two quarterback hurries.
A Chantilly, Va., native, McClendon posted a career-high 17 tackles in a 41-21 Homecoming win over St. John Fisher College to earn Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week honors and help lock up the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament for the Sea Gulls.
He was a three-time ACFC All-Academic Team selection and a 2010 All-ACFC Second Team honoree. McClendon has also been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Additionally, he was named a 2011 National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American.
McClendon is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America status to be announced at a later date.
Salisbury closes the regular season Saturday, hosting Frostburg State University in the 13th annual Regents Cup game. A win against the Bobcats would give SU its first outright conference championship since winning consecutive ACFC titles in 2004 and 2005.
