Former Sea Gull named to Washington Redskins 53-man roster
ASHBURN, Va. - Salisbury University alumnus and former member of the football team Byron Westbrook was named to the 2009 Washington Redskins 53-man roster. Final rosters for all 32 teams of the National Football League (NFL) were due by 6 p.m., Saturday to the league office.
Westbrook, who was an All-American at SU, is one of 10 defensive backs that the Washington Redskins named to the active roster. Westbrook will debut with the Redskins on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. in the season opener against the New York Giants.
This preseason Westbrook has recorded nine tackles, all solo. Westbrook had a preseason high four tackles in Thursday's final preseason game, a 24-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Westbrook is the career leader in interceptions at Salisbury with 18 and was a 2006 American Football Coaches Association All-American. In addition, the Ft. Washington, Md., native was a three-time All-Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) first-team selection at defensive back and was a two-time first-team selection on special teams. Westbrook was also a two-time D3Football.com All-American (2004, '06).
Byron is the younger brother of two-time Pro Bowl Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook. The younger Westbrook played the role of his older brother on the scout team in practices during the weeks when the Redskins played the Eagles.
