Salisbury's own Sherman Wood to compete in 2nd annual "Dancing With Delmarva's Stars"

SALISBURY, Md. - The head coach of the Salisbury University football team, Sherman Wood, teaches his players some fancy footwork to use on the field. On May 22, he'll step off of the field and onto the dance floor, getting the chance to show off his own skills as he competes in The Wellness Community-Delmarva's "Dancing with Delmarva's Stars".

The Wellness Community is a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing free emotional support, education and hope for people affected by cancer and their loved ones. The Delmarva chapter is one of 21 chapters nationwide and is based in Salisbury, Md., with programs held in Worcester County as well as at the Regional Cancer Center in Easton, Md. "I thought this was a wonderful way to support such a serious cause," said Wood. "This is a very creative way to help raise money for the cause and I thought I could be an example to the men in the community to be aware of the process."

Wood is one of 12 local community members participating in this year's 2nd annual competition. Each dancer is paired up with one of the shore's best dance instructors for 6-8 weeks to perfect their routine, which they will perform on May 22. In addition, each dancer has the opportunity to reach out to the community through their own fundraising efforts to help support The Wellness Community-Delmarva.

Though he hasn't had any professional dance experience, Wood thinks he can put on a solid performance. "I'm a pretty athletic guy," he said. "But most importantly this is a great opportunity and wake-up call for the community."

This year's event will be held at Salisbury University in Holloway Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. and performances begin at 7 p.m.
