Salisbury ranked No. 8 in final ECAC Lambert Meadowlands Poll

CAPE COD, Mass. -  The Salisbury University football team is ranked eighth in the final Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lambert Meadowlands Division III football poll presented by FieldTurf Tarkett.

Salisbury (9-2) ended its 2008 campaign with a 21-17 win over Moravian College in the ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship and finished the season ranked No. 24 in the final D3football.com poll.

The top three spots remained unchanged as SUNY Cortland grabbed top honors followed by Washington & Jefferson College and Atlantic Central Football Conference rival Wesley College. Hobart jumped two spots to finish fourth while Ithaca and Curry drop a spot each to finish fifth and six, respectively. Muhlenberg College gathered a few late points to break a two-way tie for eighth place with the Sea Gulls as they moved up one spot to No. 7. Trinity (Conn.) College dropped two spots to No. 9 while Montclair State University rounded out the Top 10.

Established in 1936 as the Lambert Trophy to recognize supremacy in Eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best team in the East in the Bowl Subdivision. In 1957, the Lambert Cup was created to recognize non-Division I-A teams, and in 1966 a Division III award was added. In 1983, the Lambert family decided the Meadowlands Sports Complex would be the best organization with a sincere and involved interest in college athletics to sponsor and manage the award, and since that time, the awards have been known as the Lambert Meadowlands Awards.

To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Award, a school must be located in the East or play half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania, while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if half of their schedule features eligible teams.
