Salisbury moves up one spot to No. 8 in ECAC Lambert Meadowlands Poll

CAPE COD, Mass. - Salisbury University jumped up one spot to No. 8 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lambert Meadowlands Division III football poll presented by FieldTurf Tarkett. The Sea Gulls hold a two-way tie for eighth place with Muhlenberg College.

SUNY-Cortland (11-1) regained its spot at No. 1 after it defeated No. 6 Curry College, 42-0, in the second round of the NCAA playoffs this past Saturday. Washington & Jefferson University (11-1) moved up one spot to No. 2. Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) foe Wesley College (9-2) slid two spots to No. 3 after the Wolverines were upended by Mary Hardin-Baylor, 46-14, on Saturday. For the second consecutive week, Ithaca College (9-2) and Hobart College (9-1) were at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The Division I-A poll is led by Penn State (11-1), while James Madison (11-1) sits atop the ranking in I-AA. California (Pa.) is in its fifth week at No. 1 in the Division II poll with a 12-1 record.

The Sea Gulls (9-2) defeated Moravian College, 21-17, on November 22 to capture the 2008 ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship. The maroon and gold are ranked No. 17 in the D3football.com Top 25 media poll and No. 21 in the American Football Coaches Association Poll (AFCA).

The ECAC will release the weekly poll in each of the four divisions (Bowl Subdivision (I-A), Championship Subdivision (I-AA), II and III) and the final poll in January will determine the trophy winners. The first place teams in the final poll will be presented with their Lambert Meadowlands Awards during the Eastern College Football Awards Banquet, held in the Pegasus Restaurant at the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

Established in 1936 as the Lambert Trophy to recognize supremacy in Eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best team in the East in the Bowl Subdivision. In 1957, the Lambert Cup was created to recognize non-Division I-A teams, and in 1966 a Division III award was added. In 1983, the Lambert family decided the Meadowlands Sports Complex would be the best organization with a sincere and involved interest in college athletics to sponsor and manage the award, and since that time, the awards have been known as the Lambert Meadowlands Awards.

To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Award, a school must be located in the East or play half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania, while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if half of their schedule features eligible teams.
