Three Sea Gulls named to ECAC Division III Southwest Football All-Star Team
CAPE COD, Mass. - The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2008 Division III Southwest Football All-Stars on Monday and Salisbury University had three defensive players garner awards. Salisbury senior defensive back Matthew Bookard, senior defensive end Jarrell Chandler and junior defense end Paul Cynewski were three of 25 recipients to be distinguished with this honor.
Bookard was very impressive for the Sea Gulls this past season and was a big part of Salisbury's 2008 ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship. Bookard made three interceptions and returned them back for touchdowns in three different games. The Lanham, Md., product recorded 3.5 sacks for 32 yards. The All-Atlantic Central Football Conference second team selection forced one fumble this season for the maroon and gold.
Chandler had a phenomenal season for the Sea Gulls this fall. He was named to the three different All-American teams including; the American Football Coaches Association first team, the D3football.com All-American first Team and the Associated Press Little All-American second team. The All-South Region first team selection ranks fourth in the nation for tackles for loss average per game (2.15) and 15th in the nation for sacks per game (0.95). The Salisbury, Md., product was ranked sixth in the ACFC in tackles (64) and tackles per game (6.40). While being honored as an All-ACFC first team selection in '08 as he was tied for first in sacks (9.5). Chandler also led the ACFC in tackles for loss average per game and was second in tackle for loss yards (90).
Cynewski, an All-ACFC first team selection, shared the lead for sacks in the conference with Chandler as they both tallied 9.5 sacks on the season. Cynewski ranks second in the conference in tackles for loss with a 1.59 average per game. The Moorestown, N.J., native led the ACFC in tackle for loss yards with 102 and recorded 42 tackles, six quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick this season.
Wesley and the Apprentice School were the other teams to be represented from the ACFC on the ECAC All-Star team. The Wolverines had five players honored while Apprentice freshman Mana Ohia was named the ECAC Southwest Rookie of the Year. Washington and Jefferson's Bobby Swallow was tabbed as the ECAC Southwest Division III Football Player of the Year.
