Curley, Smedley chosen as ACFC Players of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) named its first players of the week for the season on Monday and Salisbury University had two representatives on the team. Senior quarterback Ronnie Curley was named ACFC Offensive Player of the Week and freshman slot Randal Smedley was named ACFC Rookie of the Week after their performances in last Saturday night's 48-6 victory over Geneva College.
Curley had an outstanding game behind center as he rushed for 100 yards on 13 carries. The senior averaged 7.7 yards per carry for the game. His night was highlighted by a first quarter 68-yard touchdown run. The Ellicott City, Md., native also hooked up with junior slot back William Midgette on a five-yard touchdown pass.
Smedley rushed for 50 yards on three carries for an average of 16.7 yards per carry against the Golden Tornadoes. The freshman from Frederick, Md., tallied his first collegiate touchdown with a 26-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter.
Frostburg State University defensive back Terryl Monroe and junior punter Nick Payne were selected as the ACFC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. The Bobcats lost 49-21 to No. 13 Washington & Jefferson College.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, September 20, at 1 p.m. as they host Christopher Newport University at Sea Gull Stadium.
