TOWSON, Md. - The Salisbury University football
team ran for over 400 yards en route to a 42-15 lopsided Regents
Cup victory over in-state rival Frostburg State University before
2,410 fans here on Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Ronnie Curley ran for 178
yards and scored the game's first touchdown, on an 18-yard scamper,
to earn the Mike McGlinchey MVP award for Salisbury. The Gulls
(5-5) raise their record to .500 and finish the regular-season with
a 2-2 record in the Atlantic Central Football Conference. The win
is also the 50th career win at Salisbury for Sea Gull head coach
Sherman Wood (50-31 in eight seasons).
SU will now await the announcement of a possible ECAC bowl game.
The Sea Gulls won the ECAC Southeast Bowl last season when they
defeated Franklin & Marshall, 27-23.
The Sea Gulls scored three first half touchdowns and held the
Bobcats (2-7, 0-4 ACFC) to two field goals by Nathan Menhorn, the
FSU Mike McGlinchey MVP, to head into halftime up 21-6.
This was the 8th annual Regents Cup and the third straight cup
victory for the Sea Gulls as they lead the series 18-16.
Senior Anthony Johnson ran for 70 yards on the
day highlighted by a 30-yard touchdown run at the 3:52 mark in the
second quarter. The SU defense anchored by senior Billy
Leinemann (eight tackles, one sack) forced the Bobcats to
a quick three-and-out series. Salisbury struck again, with only 23
seconds left before the break, as freshman Valdase
Morris scored the first of his two touchdowns on the day
from eight yards out.
Frostburg's Menhorn tacked on a third field goal from 22-yards
out, early in the third quarter, to cut the SU lead to 12.
SU put the game away late in the third quarter as junior
Chris Newton scored from nine yards out followed,
two minutes later, by Morris' second eight-yard touchdown run as
the Sea Gulls led 35-9.
Frostburg State quarterback Andre Dixon (13-for-26, 154 yards, 2
INTs) threw a strike to T.J. Changuris from 12-yards out with 10:49
left in the game. The Bobcat two-point conversion failed as they
trailed 35-15.
Coach Wood was able to play a lot of his players that traveled
in the last quarter and it paid off for sophomore superback
Shelby Fisher who barreled in from two-yards out
for his first touchdown of the season with two minutes left in the
game.
This is the first time since the ACFC formed in 1998 that
Frostburg State didn't earn a conference win in a season.
