NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Atlantic Central
Football Conference announced its Academic All-ACFC honors for last
season and 40 Sea Gulls were honored as they held at least a 3.0
grade point average during one of the two semesters of the 2006-07
school year.
The Salisbury defense placed 20 players on the team led by senior
captains Zach Armiger and Billy
Leinemann. Armiger recorded 35 tackles, four sacks and 6.5
tackles for loss and Leinemann wrapped up 46 tackles, four sacks
and a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss. Other key defenders on the
team were linebacker Matt Barnes and defensive
back Ryan Hesnan who tied for the team lead with
56 tackles apiece, and defensive back Byron
Westbrook who intercepted a team-high five passes with 33
tackles. Westbrook is now in camp with the Washington Redskins.
The Sea Gull offense saw 19 players earn academic honors
highlighted by running backs Jamar Garner,
David Leonard and wide receiver Chris
Newton. Garner and Leonard combined for 523 yards on 107
attempts and three touchdowns. Newton had eight catches for 93
yards and two touchdowns to go along with 103 yards rushing and two
touchdowns.
Junior Brendan Kincaid represented the Sea Gulls
on special teams. Kincaid was 9-for-13 on field goals during the
year and a perfect 21-for-21 on point after attempts. Kincaid lead
the team in scoring with 48 points and had a long of 44 yards.
All five SU co-captains for the 2006 season (Armiger, Garner,
Leinemann, Kristos Miliotis and Westbrook) made
the team.
Salisbury will open up the 2007 season on September 1 at home
against Albright College at Sea Gull Stadium.
