Doug Fleetwood, now in his eighth season as head coach of
the Salisbury University baseball team, has added to the rich
tradition of the program by taking the Sea Gulls to seven
straight NCAA Tournaments which includes two NCAA South
Regional titles and two trips to the NCAA Division III World
Series. In addition, Fleetwood has guided his teams to five Capital
Athletic Conference championships and recorded at least 30-wins
in six of his first seven seasons. Through his first seven
seasons, Fleetwood has accumulated a combined record of 229-81-6.
He has also won the CAC Coach of the Year award six times.
Last season, the Sea Gulls went 33-10 under the tutlege of
Fleetwood as the Gulls repeated CAC champions and continued the
streak of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances to eight
(2000-present). This was the seventh time in eight seasons that the
Sea Gulls recorded 30 wins. Senior outfielder Andrew Jensen became
the ninth Sea Gull to earn All-American honors.
In 2006, Fleetwood led the Sea Gulls to an overall record of
37-10 and the program's sixth CAC crown in the past 11 seasons. The
'06 Gulls advanced to the program's seventh consecutive NCAA
Tournament and tied a school record with 37 wins. Salisbury had
nine players selected to the All-CAC team and Fleetwood earned his
fifth conference coach of the year award.
In his inaugural campaign as head coach in 2001, the Sea Gulls
finished 33-13 and earned the school's first trip to the NCAA
Division III World Series as they finished the year ranked No. 4 by
the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The '01 season
also saw the Sea Gulls win the CAC title as Fleetwood was named CAC
Coach of the Year and College Coach of the Year by the Maryland
State Baseball Association.
Over the next three years Fleetwood elevated the program to new
heights as he added two more CAC championships and three conference
Coach of the Year awards. Salisbury finished with a 30-13-3 record
in '02, 31-13-3 record in '03 and a school record 37-13 record in
'04.
In 2004, the Sea Gulls capped their season with the school's
second appearance in the Division III World Series and a No. 7
ranking by the ABCA.
Before becoming head coach, Fleetwood served two seasons as an
assistant coach with the Sea Gulls with his primary duties as the
team's hitting coach. Since Fleetwood has been on the staff,
Salisbury has had 65 players earn All-CAC honors, 24
players receive All-South Region status and three players earned
All-American selections.
A 1972 graduate of Salisbury, Fleetwood's baseball
background includes 12 successful years as the head coach at
Cambridge-South Dorchester (MD) High School where he won the '78
state title and advanced to 11 state regional playoffs as he
compiled a 171-63-1 record. As a respected baseball teacher and
evaluator of talent, he also worked as an assistant coach with Team
Maryland for several seasons.
Fleetwood also enjoyed an extremely successful football coaching
career at C-SD as he won three state championships and was
recognized for his accomplishments by being inducted into the
Maryland High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in '03.
Along with being the head baseball coach, Fleetwood also serves
as the associate head coach-offense of the Salisbury football team.
While serving with the football team, the Salisbury offense has
consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation in rushing offense.
Fleetwood has a son, Ryan, daughter, Brooke, and currently
resides in Salisbury, MD with his wife Debbie.
