How we got here
After winning their first game of the NCAA regional over St. Joseph's College-Long Island, 3-2 in 10 innings, on Thursday night, the Sea Gulls (34-11) were unable to get going offensively in game two. Starting Pitcher Austin Heenan pitched eight strong innings, striking out eight batters and allowing only one run, but it was the only run the Huskies (29-13) would need, as they held on to defeat the Sea Gulls, 1-0. The loss places the team into an elimination game on Saturday afternoon.
How they got here
This will be the second time the Yellow Jackets (32-13) have faced elimination since falling to Swarthmore College in game one on Thursday afternoon, 11-6. The loss placed the team into the loser's bracket, but they bounced back in game two to defeat Westfield State University, 3-2, to eliminate the Owls from the tournament. The Jackets earned an automatic qualifier into the tournament after winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
The Jackets are led offensively by senior catcher/outfielder Alex Marcum and sophomore outfielder Dudley Taw. Taw led Baldwin Wallace with 14 home runs this season, and Marcum finished second with 12. The two also combined for 113 runs batted in and while also collecting 33 combined stolen bases. Taw leads the team with a .380 batting average, while Marcum is hitting .348.
On the mound, the Jackets are led by senior Evan Lovick and junior Danny Cody. Lovick earned the start against Swarthmore on Thursday and struggled in the no decision, as he was pulled from the game after only three innings of work, allowing four earned runs on nine hits. Cody pitched in Friday's win over Westfield State, going eight full innings, while allowing two earned runs on eight hits, and striking out seven batters.
A loss this afternoon would eliminate the Sea Gulls from the tournament, ending their season. A win would eliminate the Yellow Jackets and advance the Sea Gulls into a second game later Saturday night against the winner of the elimination game between SUNY Cortland and St. Joseph's (L.I.). That game is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
