SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team defeated visiting Stevenson University, 13-5, at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The win marks the fifth straight for the Sea Gulls (15-7), who have found their stride at the plate, scoring 12 or more runs in four of the contests during the streak.
Already ahead two runs in the second inning, Matt Padeway and Justin Meekins hit back-to-back solo home runs to double the lead to four. Singles by Jack Decker and Jay Perry, and a sacrifice bunt by Will Gutekunst, each led to three more runs before the Mustangs (12-11) could record the final out of the inning.
Perry smacked his third home run of the season – a two-run shot over the right field fence – in the eighth inning with the game already out of reach, pushing the Sea Gull lead to 12-5. Perry led all Sea Gulls with four RBI on the day. Decker followed, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Jimmy Adkins tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief to earn his second win of the season. He collected five strikeouts, while allowing only two hits and one unearned run.
Meekins had a great day on the bases, successfully swiping six bags, including stealing home in the first inning for the first run of the game on a double steal.
The team will travel to Arlington, Virginia on Thursday afternoon to take on Capital Athletic Conference rival Marymount (Va.) University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
