NORFOLK, Va. – The Salisbury University baseball team took to the road for the first time in 2018 when it traveled to Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon. A complete game shutout by starting pitcher Austin Heenan helped keep the Marlins out of the run column and hand the Sea Gulls their first victory, 3-0.
The Sea Gulls got on the board early, scoring two of their three runs in the top of the second inning. With two already gone in the inning, and men standing on second and third base, second baseman Jimmy Adkins stepped to the plate and delivered a two run RBI single up the middle. Adkins RBI single plated both Jack Barry and Dillon Waters to give the Gulls a 2-0 advantage.
Salisbury would add one more run in the top of the fifth. A two-out walk by Justin Meekins, followed by a single from Scott Ardoin, put a runner in scoring position for Jay Perry, who hit an RBI single up the left field line, plating Meekins.
Three runs were more than the Sea Gulls needed to pick up the win. In going the distance, Heenan was able to lower his earned run average to 1.93 while striking out 10 batters, walking three more, and giving up only two hits.
The team will travel to Carlisle, Pennsylvania on Saturday, March 3 to play a double-header against the Dickinson College Red Devils. Game one first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
