Baseball picks up win to advance to CAC championship
The No. 16 Salisbury University baseball team took the next step toward the program’s 14th Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 25-10 win against Wesley College on Friday morning, sending the Sea Gulls to the title game on Saturday. Playing as the visiting team at the SU Baseball Field, the Sea Gull offense unloaded for seven runs in the first inning, getting a bases-clearing double from senior Tom LaBriola for a 4-0 lead… and Colby Dean lifted his third home run of the season – a no-doubt shot – high off the net beyond the right field fence for two more runs. Salisbury got five more runs in the third inning, highlighted by Pete Grasso’s grand slam, which was part of a seven RBI day for the senior. The big lead was plenty for Salisbury starting pitcher Micah Wells and the Salisbury defense. Wells picked up his sixth win of the year, giving up just two hits over the first six innings. The Wolverines got eight runs in the seventh inning, but it was not until after the Sea Gulls had opened up a 23-0 lead, with home runs from Brad Keith and Tom LaBriola. Salisbury now will take on either Wesley or Mary Washington in the championship game on Saturday, April 22, beginning at 11 a.m. With a win, the Sea Gulls claim the title. A Salisbury loss would lead to a winner-take-all game Saturday afternoon.
