Sea Gulls sweep Frostburg State behind a mix of timely offense and solid pitching

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team traveled to Frostburg State University on Sunday afternoon for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader matchup. The Sea Gulls swept the series with the Bobcats, winning by scores of 6-1 and 9-7.

Game One: Salisbury 6, Frostburg St. 1

Frostburg jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage scoring in the bottom of the second but its lead was not held for long as Salisbury rallied back the next inning. In the top of the third the Sea Gulls plated two runs, taking the lead for good.

Justin Meekins led off the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to second a few batters later after Pete Grasso singled back up the middle. Tom LaBriola stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and two outs and drove in both runners with an RBI double.

LaBriola struck again in the fifth inning notching his second double of the day plating Jack Barry for a 3-1 advantage.

That was all the insurance Grasso needed as he remained perfect this season moving to a record of 4-0. He threw a complete game allowing just five hits and one run while totaling five strikeouts. Grasso also forced the Bobcats into a three up and three down situation in three separate innings including the ninth.

Offensively Grasso helped out his own cause with an RBI triple in the seventh inning to stretch the Sea Gull's advantage to three, 4-1. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

LaBriola finished game one going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk. Scott Ardoin was the only other member of the maroon and gold to tally a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-5 with a run scored on Grasso's triple.

Game Two: Salisbury 9, Frostburg St. 7

The Gulls' offense opened up in game two, combining for 11 hits with four players recording multi-hit games as seven Sea Gulls found their way into the hit column.

Barry opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning of game two with his team leading fifth home run of the season launching a two-run shot over the left field wall for the 2-0 lead.

After Frostburg came back to knot the game at two all Colby Dean quickly took the lead right back for Salisbury knocking a triple down the right field line plating LaBriola. Once again the Sea Gulls took the lead in the third inning just like in game one and never gave it back.

The offense kicked into second gear in the sixth inning scoring five runs. After two early inning runs, LaBriola showed his offensive prowess knocking a triple down the right-field line scoring both Barry and Ron Villone for an 8-3 advantage. Colby Dean tallied his second RBI of the game just a few at-bats later knocking a single through the right side to plate LaBriola.

The Bobcats pulled within two in the bottom of the seventh inning but Jeff Oster managed to close out the win earning his first save of the season and preserving Micah Wells fourth win of the season.

Wells finished the game going six innings pitched allowing 10 hits and four runs while striking out two. Oster completed the game going two and a third innings pitched allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.

LaBriola finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Colby Dean went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Salisbury returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 as the Sea Gulls will take on the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. That game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
