SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 13 Salisbury University baseball team defeated Stevenson University, 19-7, on Tuesday afternoon behind a power surge that was led by senior Tyler Hrycak's career-high seven RBI at the SU Baseball Field.
Hrycak jumped all over the Mustang pitchers, going 4-for-4 at the plate in the game, while crushing a three-run double and a grand slam for his seventh home run of the season.
The Mustangs used three runs in each of the second and third innings to take an early lead, but the Sea Gulls answered in their half of each inning to keep the score even heading into the fourth.
Salisbury tied the score, 6-6, in the bottom of the third, as junior Tom LaBriola ripped an RBI single into centerfield to get the score to 6-3. The Sea Gulls then loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, bring Hrycak up. He would not miss his chance, blasting a double to deep center field, clearing the bases and knotting the score.
Junior Ryan Daiss, who came in to pitch in the fourth, set the Mustangs down in three batters, with the help of an inning-ending double play, to bring the Gulls back to the plate.
The Salisbury offense proceeded to break the game open with a seven-run frame, led off by two more hit batters to get two on. Grasso plated both on a double into centerfield, before two more walks loaded the bases again for Hyrcak. He again connected on his pitch, lining a 1-and-2 pitch over the right-center fence to again empty the bases and push the Salisbury lead to 12-6.
Senior Kyle Goodwin drove in the final run of the inning on a single just past the first baseman's glove through the right side.
The Mustangs got a run back in the fifth, but Salisbury continued the power show in the bottom the inning. Senior Jake Dmiterchik blasted his team-leading ninth home run to begin the inning, before Barry connected for a two-run shot to increase the lead to 16-7.
The Sea Gulls tallied another three-run inning in the seventh to cap the scoring, as Daiss continued to baffle the Stevenson hitters. In four innings of work, he only allowed one unearned run and three hits, while striking out five, for his second win of the year.
Each Salisbury starter tallied at least one hit in the contest, as the team combined for 16 in the game; Grasso, Keith, and Barry each collected two hits, as Barry scored four runs to lead the team. Keith and Dmiterchik each tallied three runs scored.
The Sea Gulls are next in action on Thursday, April 28 at the SU Baseball Field, playing host to Drew University; the game is set for 3:30 p.m.
