SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 11 Salisbury University baseball team fell in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon 10-5 to No. 16 Christopher Newport University at the SU Baseball Field.
Both teams went three up, three down in the first inning, as junior Pete Grasso only needed nine pitches to get through the top half of the inning. He struck out two Captains' to close out the frame.
CNU, however, took the lead in the second with a sacrifice fly, before a two-run home run by Keith Roberts highlighted a three-run third for a 4-0 lead.
The Sea Gulls answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the deficit. Senior Alex Lipman walked to lead off, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Scott Ardoin. Lipman then came in on an RBI single up the middle by senior Tyler Hrycak.
Two batters later, Hrycak came home on a fielder's choice with Grasso at the plate. Grasso led the Sea Gulls on the day with two RBI.
Collin Lawless hit a solo homer in the fourth to extend CNU's lead back to three, before Salisbury continued to climb back to within one.
The teams combined for only one hit over the next two innings, before the Gulls tallied their third run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Tom LaBriola blasted a two-out double to deep center field, before coming home on a single by senior Jake Dmiterchik.
Salisbury took advantage to two Captain errors in the next inning to cut the lead to one, 5-4. Ardoin got on after being hit by a pitch and eventually scored on the second error of the frame.
Senior Connor Shockley, who entered the game in the fourth inning, allowed just one CNU hit in his first 4 2/3 innings, as the Gulls came back to the one-run deficit. He held the Captains in the eighth, but the Gulls' offense was unable to add any runs in the bottom of the inning.
Christopher Newport then opened up a five-run frame in the ninth, including a three-run homer by Kyle Corwin to push the lead to 10-4.
Grasso added his second RBI in the Sea Gulls' final at-bat, but CNU was able to hold on for the win.
Sophomore Brad Keith went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the team, while Lipman scored two runs.
The Sea Gulls will close out their CAC regular-season schedule on Saturday, April 16 before the start of the conference tournament on Tuesday, April 19. Salisbury will host Penn State University-Harrisburg on Saturday in a doubleheader at the SU Baseball Field, set to begin at 12 p.m.
