YORK, Pa. - The No. 11 Salisbury University baseball team picked up two more wins on Sunday, April 10, sweeping York College of Pennsylvania in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Gulls took the first game 10-4, before winning the second 8-5.
Salisbury 10, York 4
The Sea Gulls were led by another strong pitching performance by freshman Ian Scheidemann on the way to the win in game one. Scheidemann pitched eight innings, while allowing only seven hits and two runs and striking out two for his second win of the season.
Senior Jake Dmiterchik led off the second inning with a single for his first of a team-leading three hits, on the way to the Gulls' first run. He later crossed home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jack Barry for a 1-0 lead.
Scheidemann continued to hold the Spartans' offense scoreless through the first-seven innings, while Salisbury continued to add to its lead.
Junior Pete Grasso and Barry both walked, sandwiching a single by sophomore Brad Keith, to load the bases in the fourth. Grasso scored on a fielder's choice with senior Tyler Hrycak at the plate, before Keith came home on a wild pitching, bumping the lead to 3-0.
Junior Tom LaBriola crushed his third home run of the season in the fifth inning to add to the advantage, before Salisbury broke the game open with four runs in the sixth.
The Sea Gulls again loaded the bases, before a fielder's choice by LaBriola and a Spartan error allow two runs to come in. Dmiterchik then connected for his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to increase Salisbury's lead to 8-0.
York came up with two runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but the Sea Gulls had already done their damage to take the win.
Dmiterchik also led the team with two RBI, while LaBriola and he led the team with two runs scored, each. Goodwin tied Dmiterchik for the team lead with three hits, as both went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Salisbury 8, York 5
Neither team was able to come up with a hit through the first two innings of game two, before Salisbury put together a three-run third. Two walks and a York error allowed the Gulls to load the bases, before LaBriola knocked a single through the middle to score Hrycak and Barry. Dmiterchik followed with an RBI single to right for the 3-0 lead.
After senior Jeff Oster held the Spartans hitless through the third-consecutive inning to start the game, Salisbury came up with two more runs in the top of the fourth.
Keith singled to lead things off, before Hrycak walked to get two on. Both runners came home on a double by senior Mike LaBriola, who ripped a ball down the right-field line, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Barry added the Gulls' sixth run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but York was able to get back to within two runs with a grand slam off the bat of Logan Countryman.
Oster pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn his third win of the year, giving up seven hits and four runs, while striking out three.
Salisbury notched two insurance runs in the ninth on a single by Keith to push the lead to 8-4.
The Spartans added their final run in the bottom of the inning, before Grasso came in for the final 1/3 of an inning to earn his third save of the season.
