UNION, N.J. – The No. 8 Salisbury University baseball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon, 11-3, at Kean University.
The Sea Gulls extended their streak of scoring in the first inning to eight games, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in their first at-bat.
Senior Alex Lipman walked, before junior Pete Grasso smacked a double down the left-field line to get two on in scoring position with only one out. Lipman came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Jake Dmiterchik, who was followed by junior Tom LaBriola.
LaBriola came into the game hitting .706 with runners in scoring position to go with 12 two-out RBI; he continued that trend with a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Grasso for the two-run edge.
Kean got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first to cut into Salisbury's lead, but after that, both starting pitchers settled down and wouldn't allow a run over the next three innings.
Senior Jeff Oster recorded two-straight three-up, three-down innings for the Gulls in the second and third innings, and after the first frame, he only allowed three Cougar hits through the sixth. Holding the Kean offense in check, he allowed the Gulls to hold their lead and increase it in the fifth inning.
Back-to-back singles from senior Kyle Goodwin and Lipman put runners on the corners with no outs to start the fifth. Goodwin came in on a ground out by Dmiterchik for a 3-1 lead, giving the Milton, Delaware native two RBI in the game.
The Sea Gulls' advantage held until the seventh, when the Cougars broke through in a big way. Taking advantage of two Salisbury errors, Kean put together an eight-run inning to take its first lead, 9-3. The inning was led by a three-RBI double by Ryan Reitmeyer.
The Cougars tacked on two more in the eighth inning, before going on to take the win.
Goodwin and Grasso both tallied two hits to lead the Gulls in the game.
Salisbury will return home after a week away from the SU Baseball Field on Wednesday, March 16 for its Capital Athletic Conference home opener. The Sea Gulls will take on Wesley College, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
