YORK, Pa. – The nationally-ranked No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team is less than a week away from opening day, and the Sea Gulls will enter the season as the favorite to come out on top of the Capital Athletic Conference by the end of the year, as voted by the conference baseball coaches in the 2016 CAC Baseball Preseason Poll, the league announced on Tuesday.
The Sea Gulls lead a tightly-packed poll, with the top three teams only being separated by three total points. Salisbury garnered 74 points with four first-place votes for the No. 1 spot in the poll. The Gulls are coming off of a 33-6-1 record (16-2 CAC) in 2015, while advancing to the NCAA Division III World Series.
Trailing Salisbury by just two points, University of Mary Washington earned the No. 2 spot with 72 points and four first-place votes, and No. 3 Frostburg State University tallied 71 points with two first-place nods.
No. 4 Christopher Newport University (58 points) and No. 5 York College of Pennsylvania (44 points) round out the preseason top five in the conference.
The Sea Gulls take the field for the first time this season on Saturday, February 6 against Gwynedd Mercy University at home at the SU Baseball Field; first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
