TUCSON, Ariz. – The Salisbury University baseball team will begin the 2016 season within the top-five teams in the country, according to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III Preseason Poll and the 2016 D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Sea Gulls came in at No. 4 in both polls, the organizations announced.
Salisbury, which is coming off a 33-6-1 season and an NCAA Division III World Series appearance last season, earned 265 points on the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and 501 points in the D3baseball.com poll.
With Head Coach Troy Brohawn entering his second season at the helm for the Sea Gulls, they look to improve upon an already impressive campaign from last season. Senior Kyle Goodwin returns to help lead the Salisbury offence, after hitting .386 last season, which is tops among SU returners. Junior Ryan Daiss and senior Connor Shockley both come back to the mound, after each tallying six-win seasons last year.
The Collegiate Baseball poll was led by the 2015 national champion, State University of New York at Cortland, which tallied 273 points for the No. 1 spot. No. 2 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (270 points), No. 3 Emory University (269 points), and No. 5 Webster University (260 points) joined the Gulls in the top five to round out the group.
The D3baseball.com poll featured the same top four with Cortland (622 points), Wisconsin-La Crosse (537 points), Emory (508 points) in the top-three spots, while Kean rounded out the top five with 442 points.
The start of the 2016 baseball season is only a couple weeks away, as the Sea Gulls host Gwynedd Mercy University to open the year on Saturday, February 6 at the SU Baseball Field. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
