No. 5 Sea Gulls sweep Spartans in CAC doubleheader

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 5 Salisbury University baseball team remained unbeaten on Saturday, as it recorded a doubleheader sweep against York College of Pennsylvania in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Game 1: Salisbury 7, York (Pa.) 1

Salisbury would take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after an error by York's right fielder. After reaching on a walk and a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, respectively, senior Bobby Sanzone and junior Tyler Hrycak scored on the Spartan miscue with junior Jake Dmiterchik at the plate.

In the bottom of the third, an RBI double into left center from senior Jordan Gowe would give SU another run before the offense would open up in the bottom of the fourth.

Dmiterchik started off the scoring in the inning with a single through the left side that sent Hrycak home; Hrycak reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single from senior Danny Breen, before coming around to score.

Senior Kyle Hayman followed Dmiterchik with a walk to load the bases. After a popout for the second out, Gowe came to the plate and sent a three-run double into right field that gave Salisbury a 7-0 advantage, scoring Dmiterchik, Breen, and Hayman.

Senior pitcher Brett Collacchi saw the start on the mound for the Sea Gulls in the first game, and would only spot one run for the Spartans in his seven innings pitched, with the run coming in the top of the fifth.

Collacchi would grab the win for the Sea Gulls, while juniors Jon Schmedel and Jeff Oster each pitched a hitless inning of relief in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Collacchi is now tied for second place in career wins in program history, with 28, and moved up to third place in total starts with 38 in his career.

Game 2: Salisbury 7, York (Pa.) 2

The Sea Gulls (10-0, 6-0 CAC) would get on the board quicker in the second game, after a single by sophomore Pete Grasso for Salisbury's first base runner in the bottom half of the first inning. Grasso advanced to third after a Spartan error, and senior Tyler Illian capitalized, sending a blooper into shallow right field for the first run.

In the bottom of the second, SU would score another run to double its advantage when sophomore Scott Ardoin hit a soft RBI single to the pitcher that drove in senior Austin Barefoot.

The Spartans (4-3, 1-2 CAC) tied up the game at 2-2 after scoring a run in the fourth and sixth innings, each, but the Sea Gulls would answer back.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Barefoot would single into left center and advance junior Alex Lipman to third, after Lipman reached on a fielder's choice. During the next at bat, Lipman scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, giving SU a 3-2 lead, while Barefoot advanced to second. Hrycak would then hit an RBI single through the left side to cap off the scoring in the inning and give the Gulls a 4-2 advantage.

The Sea Gulls would make more noise in the bottom of the seventh before it was all said and done. Salisbury added three more runs to its total in the half inning to pull away from York, highlighted by Grasso's two-run homer into left to increase the lead to 7-2. Hayman singled to drive home the first run in the inning, before Grasso's round-tripper scored them both and capped the game.

Senior Kyle Hamby would earn the win on the mound for the Sea Gulls after pitching 1.1 innings of relief and notching two strikeouts in the day.

Grasso earned the start for Salisbury in the game, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing just one run, before Oster would step in midway through the top of the fourth.

Sophomore Ryan Daiss added an inning of relief in the eighth, before senior Dan Fein closed out the game for SU on the mound.

Salisbury will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25 when it takes on Marymount (Va.) University in a CAC matchup at the SU Baseball Field. That game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
