Baseball headed to Marietta for NCAA regional, begin play on Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS – The Salisbury University baseball team, which earned an automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament with the program's 12th Capital Athletic Conference championship last month, learned its destination for the 2014 championship. The Sea Gulls will head to the regional hosted by Marietta College, in Marietta, Ohio, the NCAA announced on Monday morning.

Salisbury (33-7) will be the third-seeded team in the eight-team, double-elimination bracket, with the first games scheduled to be played on Wednesday, May 14. Salisbury will take on sixth-seeded John Carroll University in the opening-round game, the time is to be announced.

The top seed in the regional is Marietta, followed by Case Western Reserve University as the No. 2 seed. Behind Salisbury are Widener University, La Roche College, John Carroll, Thomas More College and Penn State University Berks.

The only team in the regional that Salisbury has met in baseball is Marietta. The Sea Gulls have split four games against the Pioneers. Salisbury swept a regular-season doubleheader in 2006 and the Pioneers have won two meetings in the World Series in 2001 and 2011.
