SU tops poll for first time since 2009

MINNEAPOLIS – The Salisbury University baseball team took over the top spot in the Top 25 poll for the first time since the 2009 season on Tuesday.

Salisbury (13-2, 3-0) is the third consecutive new No. 1 team in the poll, following the State University of New York at Cortland and Wheaton (Mass.) College the last two weeks. It marks the second time in program the Gulls have been the top team as SU was No. 1 for three weeks from Feb. 24-March 10, 2009.

Salisbury, which jumped from No. 6 last week, earned 586 points and 20 first-place votes to finish 52 points clear of Trinity (Texas) University with 534. SUNY Cortland, with one first-place vote, moved up one sport to No. 3 with 517 points. No. 4 Marietta College (498) claimed two first-place votes, while the University of St. Thomas and Linfield College earned the final two with 472 and 446 points, respectively.

SU went 5-0 last week, outscoring then-No. 4 Christopher Newport University, Albertus Magnus College and York (Pa.) College, 43-7.

Winner of seven straight games, Salisbury hosts the Apprentice School on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
