Herbert, Kellinger lead baseball to 12-2 win against Nichols College

COCOA, Fla. – Senior pitcher Dustin Herbert (Huntingtown, Md.) was masterful and senior outfielder Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.) had a stellar day at the plate as the Salisbury University baseball team picked up a 12-2 victory Wednesday morning against Nichols College.

The Sea Gulls (11-2, 7-0 Capital Athletic Conference) pounded out 15 hits in the win as Kellinger finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate including his first home run of the season. Kellinger scored three runs and drove home two.

Salisbury put two runs on the board in the first, added another in the second and two more in the third to open up a 5-0 lead.

That start was more than enough for Herbert, who worked six strong innings, scattering five hits while allowing just one run and striking out six batters.

Juniors Drew Baldwin (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Kevin Story (Damascus, Md.) and senior Chad Wolfe (Thurmont, Md.) each worked one inning in relief, holding Nichols in check.

Junior Andrew Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.), seniors Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.), Ryan Smith (Waldorf, Md.) and Wolfe each had two hits in the game. Celenza scored three runs and Smith drove in three.

The teams will get together again on Thursday at 1:15 p.m. It will be the second game of the day for the Sea Gulls, who will meet Baruch College at 9 a.m. Thursday’s action will close out Salisbury’s stay in Florida for 2010.
